Our union was founded on two fundamental and essential principles: First was to establish a certification agency that was not privately owned or controlled and that was democratically run by the hypnotherapist members; and second, to establish a lobbying partner that gave us the clout we needed to battle the APA, the CPA, The CAMFT and the Department of Consumer Affairs to ensure our right to practice hypnosis without the requirement of being a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist? a right that has been challenged again and again in California, and across the country.

As part of the Office and Professional Workers International Union, members of the Hypnotherapists Union are part of an international organization of over 145,000 white-collar professionals. United with the greater AFL/CIO we are over 13,000,000 strong, creating a powerful voice in our legislative bodies nationwide.

In order to protect our members and our livelihood?your livelihood? our union is constantly monitoring the legislative landscape. The Hypnotherapists Union is the only certification agency that is not run or controlled by one person, and is the only one run by the members through a democratically elected board. The board is elected every three years to represent and serve you.

Why should I join the union?

By joining you open the door to becoming an active participant in your future and the future of hypnosis. We encourage your input and involvement in the shaping of our profession for the future. Your membership also helps ensure your legal rights to practice as a hypnotherapist. The strength of our voice in legislative circles is directly proportionate to our numbers.

Where does my money go?

Membership fees and annual dues are used to maintain our affiliation with the international AFL/CIO. Recently, with AFL/CIO assistance, we helped defeat legislation attempting to ban lay hypnotherapy in Hawaii. Our other major expense involves maximizing member benefits. A small fraction of your fees cover administrative expenses.

Why should I get certified?

Certification as a union hypnotherapist promotes your credibility as a professional. Utilizing the global awareness of the AFL-CIO name and logo in your promotional materials is also an important marketing tool. It helps to instill needed confidence in your abilities in new and potential clients ? a vital foundation for success in practice.

How can I participate and have a voice?

Your membership entitles you access to the union executive board and officers at any time and the opportunity to attend monthly meetings and voice your opinions and concerns. We strongly advocate and encourage member participation.

What are the requirements for membership?

Our Union requires 300 hours of classroom instruction from any State licensed school of hypnosis and 200 hours of supervised experience under the supervision of your school or another Union Hypnotherapist.

Hypnotherapists are self-employed professionals and the Union does not strike or negotiate wages. Instead we use our affiliation with the AFL-CIO's 13 million members, to protect our legal right to practice. Together, we're making a huge difference. And membership is growing.
